We were contacted by the Duty Controller to assist a walker with a suspected fractured ankle below Broad Clough on the western edge of Kinder Scout. The walker has suffered an extremely painful injury and was being looked after by friends when we arrived at the scene. We were assisted by a crew from East Midlands Ambulance Service who treated the walker and requested support from an air ambulance.
After administering analgesia we were able to get the walker onto our mountain rescue stretcher and place him into one of our Land Rovers, for a careful drive to close to the air ambulance. We then attached a specialist wheel to our stretcher to enable us to safely transport him up a very slippery field to the air ambulance. Doctors were then able to administer further analgesia and treat the injury. We assisted them to load him aboard the helicopter for onward transfer to hospital.
We then returned to our base in Hayfield with his friends to ensure they were all alright after the experience. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and were pleased to have been able to assist them all. Team members then returned home in the hope their special Valentine’s evenings weren’t ruined!
