The team were called to assist a lady who had slipped and injured her ankle during a low level walk on Lantern Pike in Hayfield. Fortunately it is possible to access the tracks around Lantern Pike in our 4×4 Land Rovers, so it was only a short walk to reach the lady.
On our arrival she was being assisted by the rest of her group and a passing walker, who had raised the alarm. It was clear that the lady was in pain and unable to walk any further, but was admirably putting on a brave face and dealing well with her situation. We splinted her ankle and gave her some additional pain relief. With the aid of some additional Entonox we were able to help her on to or Mountain Rescue stretcher and carry her down the hill to an area which we could access with our vehicles.
We were then able to transport the lady and the rest of her party back down to Hayfield for her onward journey to hospital for further checks.
This rescue demonstrates how having the appropriate equipment and vehicles can turn what would have been a long and painful evacuation in to a quick and relatively comfortable rescue.
We later learned that following x-rays at hospital, the lady had indeed fractured her ankle, which shows just how well she was handling the difficult situation she found herself in. The team wishes her a speedy recovery.
