A pair of walkers were heading on a route along the Kinder Scout southern edges. As they were passing Pym Chair, one of them tripped and went over on his ankle. As he fell, he heard it make noise and was immediately in serious pain and unable to put any weight on it. Realising they wouldn’t be able to get down, they called for Mountain Rescue for help.
We responded with an initial fast party to locate them and stabilise his injury. They were able to splint his ankle and provide pain relief. Two further parties arrived with a stretcher and he was carried back to our vehicles at Edale Cross. He was then driven down to our base in Hayfield to wait for family to drive over and collect him, so he could attend A&E closer to his home.
This area has always been a common location for ankle injuries, but this unfortunate statistic seems to be on the increase. In the last two months we have dealt with three broken ankles, all within100 meters of Pym Chair. This may just be an unlucky co-incidence, but it could also be down to the conditions in that area at the moment?
Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
