One of our leadership group was walking through the village with his wife and came across an older lady who had slipped on the ice. She had damaged her leg, was in significant pain and was unable to walk. EMAS were predicting a 6 hour delay for the ambulance.
Providing first aid in these urban situations is the responsibility of the ambulance service and Kinder MRT are not usually involved. However, because of the cold weather and the delay for the ambulance we decided to help. We initiated a limited call to the team. We took our team Bell stretcher, a team scoop stretcher, a chemically heated blanket and an insulating mat. We planned to carry the lady on our stretcher to her house, which was only 50m away, where she could be warm whilst we waited for the ambulance. Meanwhile, two nurses and a GP had also arrived to help.
Fortunately, the EMAS ambulance arrived before we moved the lady and they were able to take over her care.
Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
