The team was called to assist a 19‑year‑old woman near Crowden Tower. Having camped on Kinder Scout many times with her father, she was planning her first independent camp and was well prepared for the night, carrying appropriate equipment, food and clothing.
Unfortunately, her phone charger failed, leaving her without communication and without her main form of navigation. As darkness fell on the snowy plateau, she lost her bearings and used the last of her phone battery to call for help.
We obtained an accurate location and deployed a fast party to reach her, with Kinder 2 following in support. She was uninjured, warm and well‑fuelled. We walked her back to our vehicles at Edale Cross before taking her to Hayfield, where she was able to catch the bus home.
A positive outcome, and a reminder that even experienced and well‑equipped hillgoers can encounter unexpected challenges.
Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
