Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) has been in existence since 1971, and is one of seven mountain rescue teams that operate within the Peak District National Park, as part of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO).

Our 50 members operate on an purely voluntary basis and are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to assist members of the public on the hill or in urban search and rescue situations.

We are almost exclusively funded by public donations, and all proceeds from fund raising go towards equipment and resources used on our call outs.

15: Callout – 8 March 2026

We received a call for help from two males who had arrived in Edale by train and followed a route up to the southern edge path.  When they reached the top of Kinder the visibility was very limited and they struggled to find the route, so took a lot longer than expected.  They eventually lost the light and couldn’t find the way back down, so called for help.

We were able to contact them by phone, so could establish their position using PhoneFind.  Our hill parties made their way to the location and found them near Crowden Tower on the southern edge path.  They were cold, but otherwise unharmed.  After warming them up, we began walking them back down to our vehicles at Edale Cross.

Half way back along the edge path, we came across another pair of young walkers, who were making their way towards Jacob’s Ladder to finish their route.  Unfortunately, due to the very limited visibility on the tops, they were heading in the opposite direction.  As we were already heading towards Edale Cross, which is near to the top of Jacob’s Ladder, we agreed we would take them there and show them the way down.  Once at the top of Jacob’s, they felt they could find their way down from there.  To make sure, we sent them a PhoneFind link and tracked them as they made their was successfully back to their vehicle in Edale.  From there, it was only a short walk back to our vehicles for the original two casualties.

As it was now late on a Sunday night, public transport back to Halifax was very limited.  We investigated the option of staying at the George Hotel for them, but unfortunately all rooms were already fully booked.  In the end they decided the easiest option for them was to get a taxi back home.

Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
