Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) has been in existence since 1971, and is one of seven mountain rescue teams that operate within the Peak District National Park, as part of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO).

Our 50 members operate on an purely voluntary basis and are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to assist members of the public on the hill or in urban search and rescue situations.

We are almost exclusively funded by public donations, and all proceeds from fund raising go towards equipment and resources used on our call outs.

33: Callout – Sunday 8th October 2023

One of our Assistant Leaders was contacted by the PDMRO Duty Controller with a request to assist a fallen walker near Pym Chair on the southern edge of Kinder Scout. The gentleman had injured his shoulder / humerus.

Aware that volunteers from Derby Mountain Rescue Team were on Kinder Scout assisting with an outdoor event, contact was made with them. Some of their team members met up with the casualty and provided casualty care assistance to him. We proceeded with our standard deployment and a hill party was despatched from our vehicle at Edale Cross.

Other volunteers from Edale Mountain Rescue Team were in the area training with HM Coastguard’s S92 Search and Rescue helicopter. They flew to the location to assist and the casualty was evacuated from Kinder Scout by helicopter.

The casualty’s friends were safely escorted back to our vehicles at Edale Cross and we brought them down from the hill and took them to Chinley Station for their train home.

This was a fabulous example of three Peak District Mountain Rescue Teams working together, supported by HM Coastguard to give the casualty the very best and quickest treatment. We all train closely together to ensure that when called upon we can use our joint resources to assist someone needing our help.

We wish the gentleman good luck with his recovery and hope he is back out enjoying the beautiful Peak District soon.

This callout was also an example of how we develop our leaders of the future. We have an Assistant Leaders Group who support the Team Leader and Deputies. In our absence they can deal with any kind of search and rescue incident requiring our assistance, as they did on this callout.
