A couple called 999 because they were lost in the dark. Their phone signal was poor and the only information available was they had set off from Edale 2 hours previously. There was no further contact from the walkers as they presumably took shelter in a mobile phone black spot. This meant our usual technology help like PhoneFind and What 3 Words were not available. With little information to go on, the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation Duty Controller implemented ‘The Kinder Plan’; a pre-prepared plan that splits up Kinder Scout into four search areas, each covered by a different team: Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, Edale Mountain Rescue Team, Glossop Mountain Rescue Team and Kinder Mountain Rescue Team. Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England provided search dogs and Buxton MRT provided a search drone. In all around 80 mountain rescue volunteers (and three search dogs) were deployed.
Edale MRT located the walkers half way up (or down) Grindsbrook. The walkers were wet and cold but unharmed. They were able to walk back to Edale.
Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
