A pair of experienced walkers had planned a long route from Castleton, over to Kinder Scout and back via Grindsbrook Clough. Part of their route took them to Kinder Low, then over the plateau, through the Woolpacks and on to the top of Crowden Clough. Unfortunately, they hadn’t anticipated just how difficult the ground conditions are between Kinder Low and the Woopacks. They found themselves navigating through deep peat groughs which was very slow going. This section had taken them much longer than they had anticipated and by the time they reached Crowden Tower it had gone dark. They hadn’t expected to be out for so long and were now stuck, so they called for our help.
Fortunately, the first Monday evening of the month is our Casualty Care training night, so we had an unusually high number of people already on their way to base. We were able to find their location from their phone, so we quickly drove a couple of search parties up to Edale Cross to head out to collect them. Once we found them, it was clear they were cold but unharmed. We walked them back to our vehicles and drove them back to our base to warm up.
A group of our team members have the first part of their Casualty Care exam coming up this week. Fortunately we had enough team members available to hold these people back so they could carry on with their exam revision.
Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
