Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) has been in existence since 1971, and is one of seven mountain rescue teams that operate within the Peak District National Park, as part of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO).

Our 50 members operate on an purely voluntary basis and are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to assist members of the public on the hill or in urban search and rescue situations.

We are almost exclusively funded by public donations, and all proceeds from fund raising go towards equipment and resources used on our call outs.

40: CALLOUT – 24th June 2024

The Team received a call from East Midlands Ambulance Service to ask for our assistance with a walker with an ankle injury.  The initial location we were given appeared to suggest this would be a quick pick up and carry to the ambulance, so a limited callout was issued and a team of four were deployed.  However on arrival it appeared there was no casualty at that location.  After a bit of extra digging, another possible location was found which placed the casualty at the top of Red Brook on Kinder.  Unfortunately the casualty’s phone was out of signal, so we couldn’t call or text them to confirm where they were.  The callout was swiftly upgraded to request the full team and Kinder 1 were diverted to head up to Red Brook through Cluther Rocks.  We had an excellent turn out for a Monday night of 28 team members, so having three vehicles which can all drive up to Edale Cross meant we could deploy them much quicker than before the new vehicle arrived.

Once Kinder 1 arrived at the new location they were able to confirm that they had found the casualty and two friends.  He was suffering from a badly sprained (possibly fractured) ankle which was quickly splinted.  The rest of the team carried a stretcher to them and he was wheeled out to Edale Cross, before having a comfortable ride down in our new Land Rover Defender.

Once back at base he was assessed by the waiting ambulance crew, who transported him on to hospital.

It turned out to be an unusually warm, still night on Kinder with a beautiful sunset on the way back.  The team wishes him a speedy recovery.

Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
