We were asked to help a 67 year old man who had injured his leg whilst walking down the Kinder river. He had struggled from Kinder Gates to the Downfall and was unable to continue. We sent an initial party to locate and assess the casualty, followed by a second party to bring the stretcher. A third Kinder party followed later to help with the evacuation.
Because the call came in during working hours and because we are now in the summer holiday period, we only had a small number of volunteers: 11 on the hill and 6 in support roles like driving and control. This was a long stretcher evacuation, so we asked for helicopter support. Unfortunately, none were available. However, Glossop Mountain Rescue Team were able to come to our assistance.
With Glossop MRT, we evacuated the casualty by stretcher to Edale Cross, which took 1 hr 45 mins, then by Landrover to Hayfield base.
Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is staffed by volunteers who give their time free of charge and is funded entirely by public donations.
